Speaker Bio
My wife, Joy, has put up with me for a wonderful 45 years, and we have two daughters and son in laws. Niki & Rusty Henard have two daughters. They are ranching in southeast New Mexico on Rusty’s family ranch. Arin & Brady Burnham have two sons and one daughter and are now working with us here in Colorado.
We are a multi-generational cow calf enterprise in the Purgatoire River Canyons of southeast Colorado. Purchased by my great-grandfather in 1929, our families have been raising grass for cattle grazing on native pristine pastures since. We began a rotational grazing plan with our red angus herd almost 30 years ago, with the primary focus on maximizing rest periods after grazing. We operate our cow herd on a least cost philosophy. Our belief is a strong maternal herd produces females that easily maintain themselves on the range yet also produce steers that grade upper choice efficiently. We have diversified our operation in response to 25 years of drought and the variability of beef markets. We own and operate a big game hunting enterprise, landscape stone sales and a modest vacation program.
